How do Water Distillers Work?

Distillation is a process in which water is heated, cooled, and collected. During this filtration process, contaminants are eliminated and the final product is virtually chemical-free.

H20 from the tap is placed in the first chamber where it is heated and boiled. As the water turns to steam, it rises and leaves behind pesticides, chemicals, lead, arsenic, and a whole bunch of other not so tasty compounds.

The steam is pushed through a cooling system and passes through an activated carbon filter. Now a liquid again, the H20 is collected in a storage tank until you’re ready to use it.

Using a distiller is the best way to purify contaminated H2O as it removes 99.99% of impurities and the benefits are impressive.

​Types of Water Distillers

There are two different types of water distillers that is important to know before you choose one for your home. Deciding on how much distilled water you need should be done first and knowing the difference between the two types will aid you in making that decision.

​Manual

The main difference between the two types of water distillers is the user participation. With manual water distillers, you are required to replace the  water in the water tank after about a gallon has been distilled. These are cheaper units but require a little bit more on your part. For people who do not plan to distill a ton of it, manual distillers work just fine.

Automatic

For those who have no plans of refilling their distiller everytime it goes through a gallon, automatic distillers are for you. Using electrical detection systems, these distillers produce pure water for as long as the device is on unless the tank has reached a certain level. Once it does, it stops distilling until the level is lowered. 

What Should I Look for in a Distiller?

If you’ve never shopped for this type of appliance before, your head might be swirling with all the different available features. Here’s what to keep an eye out for when looking at home distillation systems and why.

Gallon Productivity

The average distiller can provide you with up to six gallons of H2O a day. Each gallon takes around four hours to produce so in order to obtain this much purified H2O, your machine would need to be running 24 hours a day.

You’ll need to crunch some numbers and determine how much H2O your family goes through during a day. To make sure your distiller isn’t causing you stress, make sure you purchase one with enough power to produce at least, if not more, of your daily needs.

Holding Capacity

The majority of distillers will come with a one-gallon holding tank. If you’re usually home when distilling H2O, this might not be as big of an issue. But if you want to distill throughout the day while you’re at work, having a machine with a small holding tank will limit your production.

Storage Container Material

There are two main materials you’ll come across during your search. Budget-friendly machines will feature a plastic container. Some won’t come with one at all.


But the best water distiller will come with a glass storage container. Plastic and hot H2O don’t mix. You could be adding chemicals to your H20 while trying to purify it. If you can swing it, either buy a distiller with a glass container or switch out a plastic storage container for your own glass version.

How Do I Keep My Distiller Functioning Properly?

Let’s talk maintenance for a second. Your distiller machine will be doing a lot of heavy lifting for you. It’s going to need a little help from time to time to make sure it’s operating at its full potential.

First, make sure you clean the distillation chamber every week. You’ll find that everything you’re removing from your H20 is collected in the bottom of this chamber. A little scrubbing and some warm water should be enough to remove the debris.

Second, if your distiller has a carbon filter, make sure you replace it every month. These filters enhance the taste of your H20 and remove any odor. You’ll definitely notice a difference if you skip this step.

The way distillers work is similar to the natural hydrologcial cycle of water itself. This process is the earth goes about dispersing and reusing water. Another word for this would be the water cycle you learned in school when you were younger.
